Cyber & Crimes

This expedition provided students with exclusive, “behind-the-scenes” access to two of Tennessee’s most intriguing sites: Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and the Historic Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary. The trip served as a powerful catalyst for career exploration, moving beyond traditional instruction to “learning by doing”. At Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Explorers delved into the world of high-tech cybersecurity, learning how essential it is to protect national infrastructure from attacks. Students were particularly fascinated to discover how computerized automobiles and semi-trucks can be hacked and controlled remotely. The visit also showcased cutting-edge technology like robotic dogs and the GEARS program, which focused on the safety of nuclear material transportation, sparking interest in engineering and computer science fields.

The exploration continued into the field of criminal justice at Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary. Students toured the historic facility, learning about its famous inmates and the day-to-day lives of those who lived and worked within its walls. This provided a raw, historical perspective on careers in public service, such as wardens and correctional officers, helping students understand the weight and reality of these roles.
